A Sliver Of Eternity

How long does it take to flip a switch and turn on an electric light? If we do not flip the switch the light will never come on. How long could that bulb stay lit? We don*t know exactly how long the bulb could stay lit but it is a lot longer than the second it took to flip the switch. Compared with eternity, our lives are shorter than the second it took to flip the switch. Compared with the short time we live on earth, the time it takes to receive Jesus is very short.

John 3:19: And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

This light is not physical, it is spiritual. And the one who turns on the switch is Jesus. If we continue to love darkness He will not turn it on. Without out the light that Jesus is and provides we will not know right from wrong. We will not know sin from righteousness. We will not know the difference between God*s will and our own. We will not know the differences between the path to Heaven and the path to Hell. We will not know which path we are on. For some individuals there may be only one occasion when Jesus offers to turn on His light. I was blessed in that He offered me more chances than I can count. My one regret is that I did not receive Him the first time He offered Himelf and His light to me. For a long time I loved darkness rather than light. I lived in darkness. He knew the best time to turn on His light for me. I wonder if it would have been my last chance. Perhaps because I lived in darkness so long it is easy for me to know the difference between walking in darkness and walking in light. Perhaps I am a slow learner. No one truly knows everything they need to know of the difference between walking in darkness and walking in Jesus* light until they actually walk in His light. Walking in His light is certainly a different life than walking in darkness.

I am thankful that He convinced me that I needed His light and that I can now live in it and walk in it. There is a strange thing about this. My flesh still prefers to walk in darkness. If it cannot walk in darkness it will prefer to walk in semi-darkness. I am thankful that when I sin He is ALWAYS able to forgive it and bring me back into His light. I am never really out of it but there are times when I close my eyes to it. I often need to clean my glasses so I can see better. Confessing and forsaking my sin is a bit like cleaning my spiritual glasses. I am thankful that I now understand something of the dangers that lurk in spiritual darkness and the safety and blessings of walking in His light.

If you have never trusted Jesus to turn on the light for you, I would suggest that you never again refuse Him. You will never know when it may be your last chance. Many individuals I encounter in nursing homes seem to have missed their last chance. I pray that is not true of them. And occasionally, but only occasionally, Jesus turns on His light for one of them. If, in a little sliver of time that He offers Himself to us and we receive Him, His light is turned on for us for the rest of our lives and forever.

1 John 1:7: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
